Imphal, Jan 4: The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) and the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights have sought the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in the aftermath of a violent incident at Saibol-Twichin, where security forces allegedly baton-charged peaceful women protesters.
During a massive sit-in protest at Churachandpur’s Wall of Remembrance, which saw widespread participation from Kuki-Zo women, a memorandum was submitted to NHRC Chairman Justice V. Subramanian via the Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur. The organizations demanded accountability and urgent action against the CRPF and BSF for their alleged high-handedness during the protest, which reportedly left over 60 women injured, many with serious injuries.
The memorandum highlighted the alleged excessive use of force, calling it a blatant violation of human rights. It urged the NHRC to conduct an independent inquiry into the actions of CRPF and BSF personnel during the Saibol-Twichin protest. It asked the commission to take appropriate legal and disciplinary measures against the security personnel responsible for the violence. The organisations have called for reaffirming the sanctity of buffer zones and safeguarding the dignity and safety of women in conflict zones.
Protesters at the sit-in carried placards with strong messages, including “Human Rights Matter,” “No to Genocide,” and “Protect, Don’t Persecute.” They also chanted slogans against the CRPF and BSF, expressing deep discontent over what they described as a “reign of terror” unleashed by central forces in the region.
Leaders addressing the protest emphasized the need for restraint and accountability, condemning the alleged use of excessive force against women, which they said symbolized a grave injustice to the community.
