Shillong , May 14: Meghalaya Revenue & Disaster Management Minister, Kyrmen Shylla, on Wednesday said that while scientific coal mining may reduce profit margins, it will put an end to illegal mining activities.
He said that people have welcomed the scientific approach, calling it a positive step for both the community and the environment. Shylla emphasized that the initiative will promote environmental safety and bring back livelihood opportunities in the coal mining areas of the state.

He pointed out that after the blanket ban on coal mining in 2014, many were forced into illegal practices simply to survive. No one wants to break the law, he added, and scientific mining—though more demanding—has been widely accepted as a path to a better and more sustainable future.
