Kyrmen Shylla urges patience amid NH 6 repairs, promises long-term solution with concrete roads

Must read

Shillong, May 15: Cabinet Minister and Khliehriat MLA, Kyrmen Shylla, on Wednesday acknowledged the difficulties faced by commuters and workers due to the ongoing repair work along National Highway 6 (NH 6). He urged the public to remain patient, assuring that the inconvenience is temporary and the results will be worth the wait.

Responding to complaints over delays and traffic disruptions, Shylla said, “Repairing, no doubt they have tried. The problem is that now with many trucks and many vehicles, those contractors, those workers it’s quite difficult, it’s challenging for them.”

He cited the ongoing work in Khliehriat town as an example of the dual burden on both workers and travelers. “Now repairing is going on in Khliehriat town. We have seen it disturbs the travelers and at the same time it disturbs the workers there. So we just have to adjust for now and when it’s done, it will be nice to see that all the concrete especially where we have seen time to time the road damage very fast whenever monsoon comes… I mean, the road damage. So this time they did it with a different mechanism, repairing it with concrete.”

Shylla expressed hope that the use of cement concrete for repairs could provide a long-term solution. “They have tried not only in Khliehriat but in different parts of East Jaintia Hills, they did it with concrete, cement concrete. So this might be a solution.”

However, he cautioned that the road’s durability will depend on whether weight limits are followed. “In the end it depends. There are times that the capacity of the road is 20 tons, and some carry more, and that might hamper the road again… it will lead to damage again.”

Shylla assured that efforts are underway to improve the highway using better materials and techniques. He called on the public to cooperate during the repair phase and have patience, as the outcome aims to ensure a smoother and more durable road in the long run.
