Shillong, Feb 19: The Office of the Hima Mylliem on Saturday conducted the election of the locality headman of Bishnupur at Deva Kumar Hall, Bishnupur, Shillong.
The election was done by Secret Ballot system. The election was conducted by the Ministers (Myntri) of the Hima Mylliem along with the Officers from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
There were a total of two candidates in the fray for the post of the Headman — Kyrsoi Bok Nongbri and Wanbok Lyngdoh.
Kyrsoi Bok Nongbri was declared the elected Headman after securing 147 votes while Wanbok Lyngdoh secured a total of 122 votes; two votes were counted as invalid. The total number of votes casted was 271.
Nongbri was later felicitated by the Local MLA Sanbor Shullai who urged the people of Bishnupur to work hand in hand with the newly elected Headman. “The Headman and us the local residents with the sense of collective responsibility will work hand in hand for a better Bishnupur”, said Shullai.
According to the rules under the Hima Mylliem, only the adult male Khasi is allowed to cast the vote in the Headman election. Whereas if the election is conducted by the Election Committee of the Dorbar Shnong both Khasi male and Khasi female voters of age 18 and above are allowed to participate in the election.
