Shillong, March 29: Laden Ch Sangma, one of the most dreaded leaders of the now disbanded militant outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), who was two days back arrested after evading arrest for 13 years for murdering a school teacher in North Garo Hills, was engaged in selling Achik swords, shields and ornaments before joining the militant outfit.
Investigation has revealed that Laden Ch. Sangma alias Chenang belonged to the first batch of GNLA and was trained in the Durama Hills of Garo Hills. It was his chance encounter during one of his travels for selling his products with the now deceased founder of GNLA, Sohan D. Shira, that he joined the outfit. Eventually, he became part of the first batch of cadres of the outfit. In the year 2012, he became the Area Commander of the Northern Zone, police said.

“Prior to his joining GNLA, he was involved in the business of selling A’chik swords (Millam), A’chik Shield (Sepi), and A’chik wearing Ornaments and therefore, he used to visit different villages of the Garo Hills. One day, he happened to meet Lt. Sohan D. Shira, the founder of GNLA and a former member of ANVC at Nengmandalgre. Thereafter, on many other occasions, he happened to meet Lt. Sohan D. Shira and became acquainted with him. With the idea of Lt. Sohan D. Shira, the arrested accused person Laden Ch. Sangma and 15 (fifteen) others went underground which eventually became GNLA under the leadership of Lt. Sohan D. Shira,” police informed.
The former Area Commander of the GNLA was arrested on March 27, for the killing of Lt Denybirth G Momin, who was a science & maths teacher of Resubelpara Higher Secondary School in front of his family members and small children and other witnesses in the year 2012. He was arrested from Baghmara in South Garo Hills district by police team of North Garo Hills.

An FIR registered with Mendipathar police station in 2012 had stated that on July 19, 2012 a group of armed GNLA militants numbering about 4-5 led by Laden Sangma alias Chenang went to the house of Denybirth Momin (23) at Resu Mepan Abri village and shot him dead outside his house near footpath, blaming him to be a police informer.
Four empty cases of AK ammunition, two empty cases of 9mm ammunition and one letter in the letter pad of GNLA signed by the GNLA Area Commander, claiming the responsibility for the killing, were recovered at the spot.
