Guwahati, May 18: Sanmmilita Sanskritik Mancha, an umbrella of 28 socio-cultural organisations on Friday held a language movement remembrance rally in Assam’s Barak valley.
“Free Palestine” posters and slogan were raised in the rally by the people who participated in the rally. The protesters hold “Free Palestine” posters where they wrote “stop killing children and innocents in Gaza”.
The people of Barak Valley observed May 19 as a remembrance of 1961 language movement where 11 youths laid lives to protect their right to mother-language.
On May 19, people pay homage to the 11 martyrs of Barak Valley who laid down their lives on May 19, 1961 advocating for the recognition of Bengali language when the government aimed to declare Assamese as the sole official language.
Their sacrifice ultimately lef to the declaration of Bengali as the official language of Barak valley and the second official language of the state of Assam.
Various organisations took out rallies where they highlight present issues like NRC, citizenship etc.
