Tura, Sept 2: The 77th birth anniversary of the late Purno A. Sangma, the former Lok Sabha Speaker and Meghalaya Chief Minister, was commemorated in a solemn ceremony held at the District Auditorium in Tura on Monday.
The event, organized by the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF) in collaboration with the P.A. Sangma Foundation (PASF), also marked the 12th Foundation Day of the National People’s Party (NPP).
The occasion was graced by prominent figures, including Soradini K Sangma, spouse of the late P.A. Sangma and Chairman of PASF, Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira, Cabinet Ministers Rakkam A Sangma and Marcuise N Marak; and Chairman of the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation, James P.K. Sangma. Several MLAs, party leaders, and dignitaries also attended the programme.
A highlight of the event was the felicitation of Jonathan Sinkam M Sangma for securing top ranks in JEE Mains 2024 – all India 1st rank for B-Planning and all India Rank 6 in B. Architecture. Jonathan, who hails from the Forest Tilla locality of Tura, was awarded Rs. 1 lakh by the NPYF to support his future endeavors. The award was received on his behalf by his parents, Dr. Riksilchi M Sangma and Dr. Aelifter R Marak.
During the ceremony, the dignitaries fondly remembered the life and contributions of the late P.A. Sangma, reflecting on his relentless efforts toward the development and upliftment of Garo Hills and Meghalaya as a whole. They also spoke about his abundant wisdom and work ethics, and the inspiration they continue to draw from his life.
In line with the ideals and vision of their late leader, they highlighted the numerous works accomplished by the party towards the betterment of the people and vowed to carry forward his legacy.
The event also featured a musical performance by students of PASF Abong Noga College.
