Shillong, July 30: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger, has assured that the overall law and order situation in the district remains under control despite a few sporadic incidents.
Addressing the media, Nongtnger detailed a recent incident, “At 03:20 am, we received information about a vehicle, ML-01-5989, belonging to the PWD department, being burned down by unknown miscreants. The vehicle was parked near the post office at Umkdait, in the compound of R. Linda Syiemiong, since Friday night. Our team, along with the fire brigade, rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames. An FIR has been filed by the PWD officer, and a case has been registered.”
When questioned about the overall law and order situation and the recent incidents, Nongtnger stated, “In spite of small incidents happening, yes, there is no doubt, but as of now, law and order is still under control.”
Regarding the ongoing investigations into the petrol bomb incident at Barapathar (Mawbah) last Thursday and the recent arson at Nongmynsong, Umkdait, Nongtnger said, “The matter is still under investigation, and hopefully, it will be solved soon.”
In response to queries about the police’s plans to curb such incidents, Nongtnger outlined several measures. “We have issued various instructions to all the OCs and ICs to ensure that vehicles, especially government vehicles, are parked in safe places and not by the roadside to avoid being targeted by miscreants. We have also requested the DC to instruct all departments to ensure the same. Additionally, night patrolling and Naka checks are routine in Shillong to monitor and reduce such incidents,” he said.
