Shillong, Dec 17: Every father wants his child to follow in his footsteps. This sentiment flows stronger for children of military families, where parents feel immense sense of pride seeing their children join to serve and protect the nation. One such family is of Lieutenant Nigel Hopkins P Marak, who hails from Tura in Garo Hills and has continued his lineage of military service.

Lieutenant Marak, a third-generation officer to join the military service, was inspired by his father’s legacy and aspired to serve in the army from a young age. Lieutenant Marak is the son of Colonel Darryl Hopkins and Mrs. Liza P Marak, who currently reside in Hyderabad. His grandfather also served as an officer in the Indian Air Force, continuing the proud tradition of military service in his family.

Lieutenant Marak was commissioned into the Indian Army on December 14, 2024 during the Passing Out Parade in Dehradun.

Educated at Army Public School, Lieutenant Marak grew up surrounded by the disciplined life of the armed forces. After completing three years of rigorous training at the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Marak joined the Indian Military Academy in January 2024 for his pre-commissioning training.

His success mirrors a broader narrative of Garo Hills becoming a hub of untapped potential and rising talent. Over the years, the region has produced exceptional individuals who have excelled in diverse fields, showcasing their brilliance on national and international stages. Like glowing embers ready to ignite into a blaze, the youth of Garo Hills are steadily making their mark, challenging stereotypes and inspiring others to dream big.

Lieutenant Marak’s commissioning is a beacon of hope for the people of Garo Hills, where opportunities often come with challenges. His journey highlights the transformative power of education, discipline, and ambition, demonstrating that even the most remote corners of the country can nurture stars destined to shine.
