Must read

Tura, June 17: Road communication link between Nangalbibra and Baghmara in South Garo Hills has been severely impacted from Sunday night after heavy rains washed away a portion of the road at Siju’s Darang Boldak village.

The damage has disrupted travel from Williamnagar to Baghmara via Nangalbibra, and from Baghmara to Nangalbibra via Siju.

Only large vehicles, including sumos and boleros are able to navigate the damaged and flooded road.

Another link road to the village has sustained extensive damage making it near impossible to cross.

Sunday night’s storm washed away a portion of the highway located at Darang Boldak, which is a little beyond Siju bazar.

The region had witnessed one of the biggest natural calamities in May 2022 when flash floods washed away roads, destroyed homes, brought down entire hills and took away human lives.

Since then, the area has been slowly limping back to normalcy, but annual monsoon rains has stalled restoration works.

To make matters worse, entire hills that were once rich with forest cover have been stripped to make way for betelnut plantations thay have further led to soil erosion and landslides.

“This area falls in Darang Boldak village and 15 KM from Nongalbibra Police Station. It’s a village Link Road and now we can’t proceed to the said village due to increasing water level of Simsang river as a portion of the road approaching the said village has been submerged under water. If rains reduce in some area we can proceed to the said place,” informed South Garo Hills SP Shailendra Bhamaniya.

More rains are anticipated in the entire Garo Hills region as the monsoon season takes over in the next few days.

Already, the first impact of the seasonal rains is being felt in the low lying areas of West Garo Hills plains with water logging, floods being reported from the Rajabala-Phulbari-Tikrikilla stretch where the Jinjiram and Brahmaputra rivers are flowing above the danger mark.
