Liver donation is a safe and lifesaving option, says Dibrugarh doctor

Dibrugarh, April 19: Poor lifestyle choices are contributing to a sharp increase in liver diseases, warned leading liver transplant specialist Dr. Sanjay Goja during a public awareness campaign press meet organised by Narayana Health and Aditya Superspeciality Hospital in Dibrugarh on Friday.

Dr. Goja, Director and Clinical Lead of Liver Transplantation, Hepato-Pancreatic-Biliary (HPB), and Robotic Liver Surgery at Narayana Hospital, stressed that sedentary habits, unhealthy diets, and lack of exercise are major drivers of liver ailments. “The spike in liver-related illnesses is directly linked to modern lifestyles. However, early detection and intervention can prevent severe damage,” he said.

With over 2,500 liver transplants to his credit, Dr. Goja highlighted the alarming rise in fatty liver disease, especially non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which, if left untreated, can escalate to hepatitis and other severe liver complications. “Fatty liver doesn’t necessarily require a transplant. Simple changes such as a balanced diet and regular physical activity can reverse the condition,” he explained.

Addressing common misconceptions, Dr. Goja also clarified that liver donation is a safe and lifesaving option. “Healthy adults between 18 and 55 years of age can donate a portion of their liver. The liver regenerates quickly, and donors typically recover fully within three months,” he noted.

Echoing these concerns, Dibrugarh-based physician Dr. Nirmal Sahewalla shared local insights, stating that NAFLD is increasingly prevalent in the region. “During daily ultrasound screenings, I encounter at least 50 cases of fatty liver. Fortunately, lifestyle modifications are often enough to treat it,” he said.

The campaign urged the public to take proactive steps—such as avoiding junk food, engaging in regular physical activity, and undergoing routine health check-ups—to protect liver health.

“Timely action can save lives,” Dr. Goja emphasized, underscoring the need for greater awareness and early diagnosis.

The initiative aims to combat the silent epidemic of liver diseases through community education, early intervention, and improved access to healthcare, encouraging individuals to make informed choices and adopt healthier living habits.
