Loaded truck overturns on Garo Hills highway, 2 dead

Tura, March 31: A shocking accident took place on the main highway in Garo Hills in which a truck collided head-on with a cyclist and hit a sidehill before overturning that killed two people and injured 8 passengers who were riding in the vehicle.

North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma informed that the accident occurred at around 3:15 Wednesday afternoon when the truck from Assam bearing registration AS18 A 4342 was returning from Gabil weekly market with loads of sacks containing betelnuts for export to the neighbouring state.

“On reaching at National Highway 51 Ronggopgre near Rari it met with the accident and as a result of which owner of the vehicle Jomiruddin Sk s/o Noru Sk of Pakriguri, Krishnai and one pedestrian Jakhi S Sangma died on the spot and 8 others sustained injuries on their bodies and were shifted to different hospitals,” said the SP.

According to the SP, the driver could not control the vehicle and it hit pedestrian Jakhi S Sangma who was riding a cycle on the highway killing him on the spot.

After hitting the cyclist the truck went off the road and hit a side earth wall before turning over.

The eight people who sustained injuries were passengers who took a lift on the truck from Gabil market and were seated behind on top of betelnut sacks when they were flung out with the load after the truck overturned.  Two amongst them are in a serious condition.
