Shillong, June 7: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the people of the state may have to suffer more power crisis in the coming days as the water level at Umiam dam used in producing hydel electricity is at its lowest and is almost at edge of shutting down.

CM Conrad said the Umiam Dam is almost at a point of shutting down since the state is not receiving the required rainfall in the past few months. He further explained the “difficult situation” that is being faced by the state.

He said the government is doing their best to ensure the load shedding doesn’t go beyond this. He said the state government will have to spend an additional Rs 300 crore to buy power if the situation in state continues to remain the same in the next 100 days.

He also explained that in the last two years, the state government is spending approximately Rs 600 crore of the state’s revenue to pay for different expenditures including the purchase of power from MeECL’s point of view to maintain the current power levels in the state.

CM said the delay in the monsoon has affected the power scenario in Meghalaya, He also said that crisis will be restored only if the state receives rain in coming days.

He also said that similar power crisis are being faced in other state too. “The rains are affecting everybody and the overall scenario is bad everywhere,” he said.
