Local resident deny HYC’s extortion allegation for land over Shillong western bypass project

Shillong, Jan 8: Rojen Khyllait, a resident of Jabbar in East Khasi Hills, has denied allegations made by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Sohiong Circle and Nongthliew Circle on land commission.

The HYC had accused Khyllait of demanding a 10% – 30% cut as commission from villagers in exchange for Land compensation for the 2-lane Shillong Western Bypass.

“I am not a land mafia,” Khyllait said in a statement. “We are not involved in any such activities, and the HYC must understand that we are not the ultimate authority to make decisions on compensation.”

Khyllait denied allegations that he had taken blank cheques from beneficiaries of the lane. “This is a complete fabrication,” he said. “I have always encouraged villagers to use the 2-lane bypass in a proper manner, and I have nothing to gain from demanding money from them.”

The HYC had filed a complaint against Khyllait and Phridensing Thabah on January 6, before DC East Khasi Hills, alleging that they had demanded money from villagers in exchange for compensation for the bypass. Khyllait dismissed the allegations as “baseless” and “misleading”.

“The 2-lane bypass is for the benefit of the general public, and I have always supported its construction,” Khyllait added.

“I urge the HYC to understand the facts and not make baseless allegations that can harm the reputation of innocent people.”

When asked about the HYC’s allegations of withdrawing money from two beneficiaries, Khyllait said, “If I have withdrawn the amount, how can someone say that I have taken money for the same purpose? It could have been for personal purposes.”

Khyllait also denied allegations that he had threatened villagers to realign the road if they didn’t pay him money from their land compensation. “I have nothing to say, and I have put it to the law to check and bring the truth,” he said.

Khyllait warned that if the HYC pursued action against him, he would take legal action against them. “I will see if the HYC is headed towards action, and I will pursue it against them in front of the law,” he said. “They should bring proof and evidence before making any allegations.”
