Shillong, July 5: An overzealous YouTuber disseminating news stories from his social media handle without adhering to the norms laid down for operating a media site was hauled up by Shillong police and given a pep talk on the “dos” and “don’ts” of running a media channel adhering to the laws of the fourth estate.
The young man, brimming with confidence and keen to play an active role in the dissemination of news, was, apparently, unaware of the proper procedure required in putting up stories and failed to seek official responses from concerned authorities pertaining to his stories.
Failing to maintain the media code of ethics, police officials had to “advise” him on adhering to protocols before he was let off with a warning.
The rise in individual social media news networks operated by users on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and twitter have been under the glare of netizens, with many raising concern over the unsubstantiated reports being put up which at times have led to personal attacks or victim shaming.
Many of these outlets, operated by individuals, do not verify from concerned authorities the information being put up, preferring to rely on rumours and unsubstantiated claims thereby encouraging fake news by way of speculative reporting.
There have been numerous instances of improper publication/telecast of images, inaccurate or unsubstantial/ unverified information, which has caused confusion amongst the public.
Gory and graphic details of mishaps or crimes have been unabashedly telecasted or published by such outlets much to the dislike of the citizenry who are demanding that authorities step in and curb this menace.
