Lone Congress MLA Ronnie leaves fate as LO to Speaker’s discretion, calls out VPP’s ‘arrogance’

Must read

Shillong, Aug 22: Leader of Opposition (LO), Ronnie V Lyngdoh, on Thursday said he leaves it to the wisdom of the Assembly Speaker on whether to denotify him from the post.

Lyngdoh has become a solo performer in the state Assembly following the recent merger of three Congress MLAs with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).

Asked about his fate, the Mylliem legislator said, “It is upto the Speaker as I am all alone now.”

“I will be meeting the Speaker tomorrow and I may step down or he may denotify me or whatever it is,” he added.

The autumn session of the Assembly will commence from August 23 to 30.

Further, the Congress leader also slammed the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) for trying to play the role of a Speaker.

“It is a ridiculous statement. They (VPP) have taken the role of a Speaker. I think it is upto the Speaker whether I will be recognized as a member of the opposition or not. If I am not a member of the opposition then I am a member of which group. I am neither in the ruling nor in the opposition – so that means they have taken over the role of the Speaker. They have taken over the role of the Tenth Schedule, maybe they would like to disqualify me, so it only shows the arrogance, and maybe they don’t have other issues except to attack us because the people are going to vote us back in the district council and people are going to vote us back in the state Assembly,” he said.

Asked if Congress is ready to work with opposition TMC, Lyngdoh said the party leaves it to the high command on the matter.

“When it comes to that we leave it to the decision of the state party and at the AICC level. If AICC says you work with TMC, we will work and if AICC doesn’t give any instruction as such there is no formal alliance in the Assembly,” he added.

To another query, the leader of the opposition said the ruling NPP did approach him through his colleagues.

“I think they (NPP) have approached through my colleagues but then I took a decision that I will remain with the party because in my opinion and I believe if I am not wrong the only party that can serve the interest of the state and the people as far as I am concerned is the Congress party because it has got its own ideology, its own programme, how to take care of all the people of the state and the country. We believe in inclusivity and not excluding anyone. I believe with that ideology I remain with the party and to the best of my ability I will serve the people of my constituency and the people of the state,” he said.
