GANGTOK, June 07: Tenzing Lamtha, the only legislator from the Sikkim Democratic Front party, has broken the silence on whether he will join the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha or remain in opposition.
Lamtha informed of the oath taking ceremony to be on June 12, where he will be present. “I will go back to the people, all the wards, thank them for voting for me. What plans they have for the constituency’s future will be decided by the public”, said the lone SDF legislator.
On Friday, speaking to the media in Gangtok, Lamtha said, “Surprisingly, out of 32 MLAs, I am the only one left out as the opposition. It’s a challenge as I have fought this election for the development and welfare of the Shyari constituency and its people. But the question is, I am in opposition and ruling is in majority”.
Tenzing Lamtha was with the SKM party before the elections. It was only when he was denied a ticket in favour of incumbent MLA Kunga Nima Lepcha that he sided with the SDF party. SDF answered his request by giving him the Shyari constituency ticket, merely hours after SKM denied Lamtha.
Lamtha secured 6633 votes with a victory margin of 1314 votes against SKM incumbent Kunga Nima Lepcha (5319 votes). He has the highest vote count among all the SDF candidates, even more than SDF supremo Pawan Kumar Chamling, who contested in two constituencies.
Earlier, when approached by the media, Lamtha indicated that he was awaiting directives from SDF party supremo Pawan Kumar Chamling and a possible address regarding the party’s poor performance in the 2024 elections. Today, however, Lamtha extended his congratulations to the SKM party and Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay for their electoral victory.
