Gangtok, Feb 10: The Losar festival, marking the Buddhist new year of the male wood dragon, began in Sikkim with the consecration ceremony of Endum Chorten at Enchey Monastery. Enchey is among the most revered monasteries in Sikkim, a few kilometres above Gangtok town.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay attended the consecration ceremony along with Kyabje Tinkey Gonjang Rinpoche, who consecrated the Endum Chorten, the supa of reconciliation, at Enchey monastery.
Endum Chorten is one of the Eight Great Stupas, symbolising a pivotal moment in Sangha history. It commemorates the Buddha’s successful reconciliation of disputing factions within the Sangha, resolving enmity instigated by Devadatta.
This stupa at Enchey Monastery, characterised by four octagonal steps, stands as a profound monument with various symbolic meanings, which are given for the four levels of eight-sided steps, totaling thirty-two in number.
It was built with the aim of averting future strife.
The construction was supported by Enchey Monastery, which provided the land on which the Chorten is built and the funds provided by the state government.
