Tura, April 29: The Government Lower Primary School, Chengkompara Songma, Ampati, celebrated School Nutrition (Kitchen) Garden Day on Monday as part of the PM-POSHAN initiative, formerly known as the Mid Day Meal Scheme.
The School Nutrition (Kitchen) Garden Day,is observed annually on April 29th, and aims to promote the cultivation of locally available vegetables and fruit-bearing plants in schools implementing the PM-POSHAN (Mid Day Meal) schemes.
Hema Nayak, IAS, Deputy Commissioner South West Garo Hills was present to observe the Poshan initiative she emphasized the critical role of nutritious food in children’s well-being and development into adulthood. She also interacted with the students and actively participated in the plantation activity, fostering a hands-on learning experience.
Nayak said that, “it is important to give nutritious food to children because it affects their well-being in adulthood. Nutritious foods like green vegetables play a vital role in the growth and development of children.”
Apojit Koch, Horticulture Development Officer, was also present for the occassion and emphasized on the significance of kitchen gardens in promoting healthy eating habits among school children.
