Mahari Football Tournament 2024 kicks-off, Rongmuthu Mahari wins opener

Tura, Aug 5: The 4th Mahari Men’s Football and 2nd Women’s Mahari Football got underway on Monday at the GBHSS Chandmari Playground in Tura.

The tournament is being organised by the District Sports Office in collaboration with West Garo Hills’ District Administration and District Football Association.

Meghalaya Education Minister, Rakkam A. Sangma, graced the opening ceremony where he donated Rs. 1 lakh to the Organising committee and also gave Rs. 5000 to each of the football teams competing in the inaugural match.

The inaugural ceremony also saw performances by Akkisa Sangma from Meghalaya Grassroot Music Project and dance performance by Tura Dance Academy.

A total of 57 Mahari teams have registered for this year’s edition of the popular tournament. 37 teams for Men’s and 20 teams for women’s. A total of 56 matches will be played.

The opening match of the tournament was played between Snal Mahari and Rongmuthu Mahari, which Rongmuthu Mahari won 3 – 1.

The first half saw Dr. Gino Sangma (jersey no. 99) opening the account for his team Rongmuthu Mahari at the 21st minute, and well as scoring the first goal of the tournament. The first half ended in Rongmuthu’s favour with 1-0. Coming into the second half though, Snal Mahari equal the scoreline with a goal in the 36th minute by Rikran S sangma (jersey no. 10).

However, their joy was shorted lived as Dr. Gino gave his team the lead four minutes later at the 40th min scored. Following an intense period of play, Gobang A Sangma (jersey no. 6) gave an unassailable lead to Rongmuthu Mahari in the 58th minute, thereby sealing the fate of the match .

Rongmuthu won the match by 3 goals to Snal’s 1 goal. No red card or yellow card was given to any player in the match.

It is worth mentioning there that the matches will be of 60 minutes duration, with each half lasting for 30 minutes.

There will be 2 matches on August 6: Cheran vs Bangbol Mahari at 1:45 and Dawa and Wa.tre Mahari at 3:15pm.
