Dibrugarh, July 12: The uprooting of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in order to make way for the construction of a Clock Tower in Doomdooma town in Tinsukia, has embroiled the ruling party in a heated controversy.
The 5.5 feet tall statue of the Father of the Nation, located at Gandhi Chowk in Doomdooma town for several years, was removed on Wednesday using an excavator crane, sparking protests among the citizens.
Former two-time Congress MLA of Doomdooma, Durga Bhumij, protested against the act and expressed his dismay over the decision and act of the administration.
“The statue of Mahatma Gandhi should remain in its original place. We could not allow the clock Tower to construct in the area,” Bhumij said.
Following the massive public backlash, Doomdooma BJP MLA Rupesh Gowala, on Thursday, assured the townspeople that a new statue of Mahatma Gandhi will be constructed at the original site within a period of 6 months.
Taking to X(formerly Twitter), Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I am not aware of this decision taken by the district administration. Let me verify the facts. Assam owes so much to Mahatma Gandhi. He stood firmly with Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi when the Congress party led by Nehru wanted to include Assam in Pakistan under the Grouping Plan,”.
