Shillong, August 20: An employee of the North Eastern Council (NEC) was arrested on Monday afternoon on charges of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old coworker.
According to sources, the victim has been working in the office on contractual basis as she had been employed on compassionate grounds.
According to police, a complaint was filed at the Laitumkhrah Police Station, following which the accused was arrested on Monday afternoon from his residence.
The accused has been identified as Shambhu Sharma, a cashier at NEC, Shillong.
According to sources, the accused had asked the victim to accompany him to a bank in the city for work-related tasks, as she was assigned to assist him. After completing the bank visit, he insisted on stopping by his quarters, claiming he had forgotten his tiffin. Once they arrived, he invited her inside and allegedly forced himself on her.
The incident reportedly occurred around 1:30 PM on Monday.
A case has been registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station vide case no. 147/2024 u/s 127(2)/74/64(2)(b) BNS and the accused has been booked for wrongful confinement/assault or use criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty/ rape.
