TURA, Nov 4: A man who raped his minor step-daughter in North Garo Hills has been sent to prison for ten years by a POCSO court in North Garo Hills, while, another rape accused who tried to commit a similar crime was given one year six months of jail term, in the same district.
The rape of the 10 year old girl by her step-father occurred in July 2018 in Nameram village of Kharkutta in North Garo Hills.
Villagers detained the accused Jaseng D Shira in the community hall and alerted police of the crime in the morning of July 31st. The mother of the victim also filed a police FIR accusing her husband of committing the rape.
An investigation by the investigation officer, Sub Inspector B N Sangma led to a charge sheet and trial took place in the court of M Skhemlon, Special Judge for POCSO cases in North Garo Hills district.
The accused Jaseng D Shira was found guilty by the POCSO Court and he has now been sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of two thousand rupees for raping his step daughter.
The second conviction was also against a father who tried to rape his own daughter at home in North Garo Hills district.
Tapan Rai of Tillapara village in Mendipathar, North Garo Hills was sentenced to 1 year, 6 months and ten days of imprisonment with a fine of two thousand for attempting to rape his own daughter, aged 10 years, in their own residence.
The accused tried to commit the crime in May 2016 but the victim was saved by the timely arrival of her elder sister to the house.
During the investigation conducted by police sub inspector V Ch Marak, it was revealed that the accused had made similar rape attempts early also.
A charge sheet was filed in February 2017 and in the judgement given this week in the POCSO court by judge M Skhemlon, Tapan Rai was found guilty and sentenced to prison for a little under two years with a two thousand rupees fine by the court.
