Must read

Guwahati, Jan 10: Assam Police have arrested Hanan Laskar, the manager of the rat-hole coal mine where a disaster struck on January 6 in Umrangso, Dima Hasao district. Laskar, employed by the mine owner, was responsible for overseeing miners’ payments.

This arrest marks a critical development in the investigation into the incident, which has brought to light unsafe working conditions and potential violations of mining regulations.

Previously, police had apprehended Punish Nunisa in connection with the same disaster. An FIR has been registered under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025, invoking Sections 3(5)/105 BNS and Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.

A joint rescue operation is underway, but adverse weather conditions have posed significant challenges to the team. As of now, 15 miners remain trapped in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso after water flooded the coal mine. The incident has underscored the dire need for improved safety measures in the region’s mining sector.
