Manipur: Following Thursday’s violence, new security strategy in place

Must read

Imphal, July 1: After Thursday’s violence in which two people were killed, the security establishment has re-strategized the deployment of forces in the fringe areas of the Imphal valley.

Sources said that it has now been decided to give responsibility of certain districts to one single force rather than deploying columns of various forces at different places in a district.

Manipur security establishment has decided to create buffer zones in these areas so that Valley people could be prevented from going towards the hills and vice versa.

Among the reasons analysed by the security establishment is the lack of proper coordination among various forces and the vastness of the topography to be covered.

Currently, there are close to 40,000 central force personnel in Manipur. These include the Assam Rifles, the Indian Army, the BSF, the CRPF, the SSB and the ITBP.

Sources in the security establishment said the Army, which was forced by a mob to release 12 Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup insurgents arrested by it earlier this week at Itham village in Imphal East district, had not taken the Manipur DGP in loop before conducting the operation.
