Imphal, Sept 16: The Manipur government has completely lifted the suspension on internet services in the five valley-based districts, after 6 days. Additionally, the government has also ordered reopening of schools in the state from Tuesday onwards.
The government had banned mobile internet and broadband internet services in the valley areas on September 10 fearing law and order breakdown after students protested in Imphal, demanding to restore normalcy in the state after 16 months of ethnic violence. The students had also announced indefinite shutdown of schools in valley areas till the government fulfilled its demands.
The affected districts were Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bisnupur and Kakching.
No restrictions had been imposed on the other 11 hilly districts in the state.
In an order on Monday, Manipur Government’s Commissioner (Home), N. Ashok Kumar, said the internet services including Lease Lines, VSATs, Broadbands and VPN services are to be restored immediately.
He, however, asked all internet users to refrain from activities which may cause situations which will warrant for suspension of internet services in future.
Earlier, the government had lifted suspension on broadband services on September 12 with strict guidelines.
“The State Government has reviewed the prevailing law and order situation in the State and decided to lift any form of temporary internet suspension in the State of Manipur which was in good faith imposed as preventive measure in public interest,” Kumar said in his order on Monday.
Similarly, Manipur’s Director of Education (S), L. Nandakumar Singh, asked all schools of the State – government, government aided, private and central schools – to resume normal classes from September 17, 2024.
