Dibrugarh, Aug 31: Despite challenging weather conditions, approximately 100 protesters staged a large-scale demonstration at Dite Dime in the Upper Siang district, voicing their strong opposition to the proposed 11,000 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose (SUMP) dam over the Siang River.
The demonstrators, which included villagers carrying banners and placards, gathered at the bridge site, chanting slogans against the mega dam project. The protest was organized by the All Adi Welfare Society, Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum, and Bango Students Union.
Protesters alleged that the government, in collaboration with National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) , had forcibly initiated the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) survey in an attempt to undermine the resolve of anti-dam activists. In response, the locals filed a complaint with the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Siang district against NHPC’s actions.
The Adi community, which predominantly resides in central Arunachal Pradesh, harbors deep concerns that large dams on the Siang River, a waterbody they revere and refer to as Aane (meaning mother), will desecrate its sanctity. For the past 15 years, both the Central and State governments have advocated for the construction of these dams, citing national interest. However, those most affected by these projects have been actively resisting these efforts.
