Massive search underway to trace Assamese music composer Ramen Baruah

Guwahati, July 24: The sudden disappearance of 84-year-old Assamese music composer Ramen Baruah has left the community deeply concerned. Baruah went missing from the Latasil area of Guwahati on Monday morning, and there have been no updates on his whereabouts for nearly 24 hours.

A renowned radio artist, Baruah has composed music for several Assamese films, including ‘Dr Bezbarua,’ ‘Baruar Songsar,’ ‘Mukuta,’ ‘Lalita,’ ‘Kokadeuta,’ and ‘Nati Aru Hati.’ He hails from a family of filmmakers, singers, music composers, artists, sportspersons, and entrepreneurs, with their over 100-year-old house in the Latasil area being a prominent landmark in Guwahati.

y. Since then, he has been untraceable, with his mobile phone switched off. When Baruah did not return home by late evening, his family reported him missing at the Latasil police station.

CCTV footage last captured Baruah near the new Gauhati High Court building adjacent to the Ganesh Temple around 10:15 am on Monday. A senior police official stated that a massive search is underway in all probable locations for the eminent singer, music composer, and director.

An eyewitness reported seeing Baruah near Kachari Ghat on the banks of the Brahmaputra on Monday, prompting the NDRF and SDRF to launch a search along the river from Kachari Ghat to Pandu Ghat on Tuesday morning. His family members and admirers have joined the police in the search, visiting various parts of the city, including Lachit Ghat, Kamakhya Temple, Sukreswar Temple, Bhootnath Temple, and Uzan Bazar Ghat.

In a late-night post on X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his deep concern over Baruah’s sudden disappearance. “His absence worries his family, friends, and countless admirers. I have asked Commissioner of @GuwahatiPol Sri Diganta Bora to mobilize all resources and take swift action to locate him,” Sarma stated.
