Shillong, Aug 7: Expressing grief over the step-motherly attitude of the state government and the local representatives for being unable to provide good road connectivity to Mawhati, a public rally on Saturday held in the area led by Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Raid Nongtung Circle.
The rally, which marched from Umpowin Village and culminated at Mawlasnai, condemned the adamant attitude of the state government towards the plight of the local residents of Mawhati.
The public rally to protest against the government and the PWD gained the support of other NGOs, such as HANM, HITO, HNYF, Seng Samla, Seng Longkmie of different villages under the of Raid Nongtung and the commercial vehicles organization of the area.
The participants of the rally raised slogans and banners citing the hardships of the residents of Mawhati area due to the dilapidated road connectivity for over a decade and demanded immediate blacktopping of the road from Umpohwin, Mawlasnai till Thadrang villages. If the state government fails to act on this demand, the residents of these villages threatened to boycott the Meghalaya Assembly Elections in 2023.
Local residents of Mawhati have been facing hardships while travelling through the major road connecting Umsning-Mawhati, Liangbang till Mawlasnai and Umsiang, a stretch of around 40-50 kilometres connecting over hundred villages under the Constituency.
