Shillong, April 5: Meghalaya’s education sector has achieved major milestones this year in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination 2025 conducted by Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), with 341 schools achieving 100% pass percentage and the overall pass percentage increasing to 87.10%.
These figures are major improvements from previous years where the pass percentage used to hover around the 50% mark. In 2024, the pass percentage was at 55.80 percent while in 2023, it was at 51.93 percent, 56.96 percent in 2022 and 52.90 percent in 2021.
The results of the SSLC 2025 exam were declared on Saturday, nearly 2 months ahead of the usual schedule, which was normally around the last week of May or early June. For reference, the results in 2024 were declared on May 24, while the results were declared on May 26 in 2023.

Beyond the improved performance of students, MBOSE has introduced sweeping reforms. From this year, MBOSE will also hold the SSLC exam twice a year. The first exam will take place in February-March, and students who fail will get another chance to appear for the exam in April – May. The aim of this change is to help students get their results sooner so they can take admission in schools and colleges without delay.
This change is also a result of the ongoing implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and is designed to support students by reducing the time lost between attempts.
Leisha Agarwal of St. Margaret’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong and Avila Kathrene P Lyngdoh of North Liberty Higher Secondary School, Jowai shared the top position in this year’s SSLC exam, both securing 582 marks.
A total of 63,682 students had appeared for the SSLC exam this year, of which 55,473 passed the exam. Among the pass candidates, 22,726 are male and 32,747 are female. Notably, 18,903 students passed exactly five subjects, while 36,570 students passed all six subjects.
A press statement from MBOSE attributed this year’s exceptional results to the dedication of the students, the revised question pattern, and the introduction of the CM IMPACT Guidebook. This Guidebook has proven invaluable, especially for students without access to quality notes for preparation and revision, the school board noted.
The number of top 20 rank holders has risen dramatically to 85 this year, up from 37 last year.
In terms of district-wise performance, West Jaintia Hills performed the best with 96.03 pass percentage. This was followed by Eastern West Khasi Hills with 95.54 pass percentage. At 3rd spot is South West Khasi Hills with a pass percentage of 94.93. The fourth spot was claimed by East Khasi Hills with 92.54%, followed by East Jaintia Hills with 92.40%, West Khasi Hills – 90.50%, Ri Bhoi – 89.33%, South Garo Hills – 88.32%, West Garo Hills – 80.50%, East Garo Hills – 80.31%, North Garo Hills – 75.76%, South West Garo Hills – 74.77%.
