Shillong, Jan 31: Meghalaya is harnessing innovation and technology for educational and agricultural advancement, promising a brighter, more sustainable future for its people.
In a pioneering move for education and agriculture, Meghalaya Chief Secretary D. P. Wahlang inaugurated the state’s first STEM Education Hub and a Soil Organic Carbon Detection Lab at the NECTAR office on the Survey of India campus this Friday.
The launch of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Education Hub is a game-changer for the state’s young learners. “Class 9 students are now learning coding, which is groundbreaking since coding is usually introduced at the undergraduate level,” Wahlang highlighted during his speech. “These students are already working on developing state-of-the-art robotics technology.” He expressed optimism that the initiative will foster innovation and critical thinking among young minds, preparing them for a tech-driven future.
Wahlang further directed the Project Director to expand the lab to hundreds of schools across the state, ensuring widespread access for students. The hands-on learning experiences offered by the STEM Education Hub are expected to ignite curiosity and problem-solving skills among young learners.
The significance of the Soil Organic Carbon Detection Lab was also emphasized during the event. “This facility will greatly benefit farmers by analyzing the carbon content in the soil, allowing them to make informed decisions about sustainable agricultural practices,” Wahlang noted.
Girish Nair, Founding Member and CEO of Curiosity Gym—NECTAR’s partner for the initiative—stressed the importance of technology-driven education. “As the world advances in technology, this initiative aims to provide school students, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, with access to activity-based learning,” he said. “Our mission is to promote science and technology education across the state.”
The STEM Education Hub will serve as a crucial resource for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. By offering practical, experiential learning opportunities, it aims to empower students with essential skills for future challenges.
Meanwhile, the Soil Organic Carbon Detection Lab stands as a testament to Meghalaya’s commitment to sustainable agriculture. As the state grapples with climate change and soil fertility issues, the lab will play a pivotal role in enabling farmers to monitor soil health and adopt better farming techniques.
