Shillong, Jan 24: The Meghalaya cabinet gave its nod to the Republic Day celebration speech during its session on Wednesday.

The draft speech, presented and discussed in detail, received approval along with other items on the cabinet’s agenda.

Scheduled for Republic Day, the approved speech will be delivered at different district headquarters, featuring addresses by various dignitaries, including the governor and members of the cabinet.

Additionally, the cabinet approved amendments to the Meghalaya Finance Service Rules 1989. Cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh explained that to ensure uniformity, these rules would be incorporated into the Meghalaya Finance Service rules with cabinet approval.

Lyngdoh highlighted the need for this step, stating that certain departments were following their own office memorandums that had not been regularised.

Furthermore, discussions included the Meghalaya government’s engagement with the High Commission of Bangladesh. Lyngdoh announced plans for unveiling a life-size statue of Tirot Singh and a bust of the renowned warrior in Dhaka on February 16. A delegation, led by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and Arts and Culture Minister Paul Lyngdoh, will represent the state at the event.

The cabinet also addressed the issue of minimum and maximum age limits for certain departments. Lyngdoh explained that four departments, including Civil Defense and Homeguard, Excise Registration Taxation and Stamps Department (ERTS), Forest and Environment Department, and Home Police Department, have different age requirements due to the physical nature of the work. The age limits range from 18-21 years as the minimum and 21-32 years as the maximum, depending on the department.

Lyngdoh also announced upcoming job advertisements for over 3,000 positions in various categories within the Home Police Department and around 500 posts in the Civil Defense and Homeguard Department within the next two to three weeks.
