Shillong, Nov 20: The Department of Fisheries on Saturday celebrated the World Fisheries Day 2021 at the premises of the Directorate of Fisheries at Shillong.
The programme was conducted in the presence of Fish farmers from East Khasi Hills, East Jaiñtia Hills, West Jaiñtia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and Garo Hills districts.
During the programme, the book “Composite Fish Culture and Biofloc Technology” published and prepared by Meghalaya State Fisheries Research and Training Institute, Mawpun, was also released
Minister of Fisheries Department, Sniawbhalang Dhar graced the occasion as chief guest in presence of Isawanda Laloo, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district, S.C.Sadhu, Secretary, Fisheries Department and the Director of Fisheries amongst other dignitaries.
Encouraging the fish farmers of the state Dhar said, “Our State may not be at par with other states in terms of fish production but we should not give up…our quantity might be less but our local fish is of high quality”. “Fish farming boosts the employment directly and indirectly and will therefore link Fisheries with the Tourism Department,” added Dhar.
The Minister also handed over the keys to two beneficiaries of two wheeler bike with icebox assistance under the PPMMSY 2020-21 scheme by the Government of Meghalaya.There was also presentation of awards to the best performing fish farmers from each of the districts.
