Shillong, March 25: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has called for localized approaches to the Act East Policy, arguing that a uniform strategy may not serve the diverse Northeast states effectively.

Inaugurating the 7th Act East Business Show which kicked off here today, Sangma proposed that each state focus on specific zones and international collaborations aligned with its unique geographical and economic strengths. “Meghalaya’s long border with Bangladesh offers great potential for cross-border partnerships, while other states might have stronger ties with Myanmar or other Southeast Asian nations. Tailored strategies will deliver tangible benefits,” he explained.

The three days’ business show organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Government of Meghalaya aims at strengthening ties with BBIN and ASEAN nations.

The event attracted delegates from ASEAN nations, entrepreneurs, ambassadors, and government officials, focusing on economic cooperation, investment opportunities, and sustainable development in the Northeast region.

Sangma emphasized the importance of forging long-term partnerships. “For us, as a state and as a nation, building strong partnerships is key. Events like these may come and go, but the connections, friendships, and mutual understanding that arise from them should remain the main takeaway,” he remarked.

A detailed multimedia presentation, led by Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner and Secretary of Planning, IP&SD, and CEO of MIPA, highlighted Meghalaya’s potential as a prime investment hub in India.

The Chief Minister pointed to Meghalaya’s rapid economic progress, with a state GDP growth rate of 13.5% in recent years, surpassing the national average. He attributed this success to targeted policies, a solid institutional framework, and determined leadership at both state and central levels. “Growth comes with a process, policy, and initiatives. We must dream big and set ambitious goals to continue this upward trajectory,” Sangma noted.

German Ambassador to India Philipp Friedrich Johannes Ackermann spoke on the increasing interest of German firms in India, especially in the Northeast. “This year, 59% of 2,000 German companies are planning fresh investments in India. They value the country’s consistent economic growth,” he said. The ambassador identified organic farming, food production, sustainable tourism, and skill development as areas ripe for German investment in Meghalaya. “Germany is committed to sustainable development. We aim to invest in green energy, eco-friendly agriculture, and high-value tourism in this beautiful region,” he added.
