Meghalaya emerges as rubber growth engine: ATMA Chairman backs Northeast to lead national production

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Mammen expressed optimism about the region’s potential, stating, “Northeast India can probably become the leading producer of rubber in the entire country.” Backed by India’s top tyre manufacturers—MRF, CEAT, Apollo, and JK Tyres—the ATMA-led initiative involves a combined investment of ₹1,100 crore aimed at transforming the rubber landscape across the Northeast, excluding Sikkim.

Set up in 2021 under the supervision of the Rubber Board of India, the Omega Green Solutions nursery in Meghalaya marks a major milestone in the region’s industrial and agricultural development. With rubber plantations already expanding across several northeastern states, Meghalaya’s inclusion underscores the project’s pan-regional ambition. The plan aims to bring over 3,000 hectares under rubber cultivation, reducing India’s reliance on imported rubber and supporting self-reliant tyre manufacturing.

Mr. Vasanthagesan highlighted the socio-economic impact of the initiative, noting that the nursery has already created jobs for hundreds of local youth. “This is not just about rubber; it’s about transforming rural livelihoods and creating long-term economic opportunities,” he said.-

The rubber saplings nurtured at the nursery are expected to mature and begin latex production within seven years, potentially turning the region into a sustainable income zone for farmers and workers alike. Stakeholders view this initiative as a turning point for the Northeast, positioning it as a strategic rubber-producing hub in the country’s evolving agricultural economy.
