Must read

Shillong, Feb 10: The Meghalaya Commissionerate of Food Safety Department has been conducting inspections in urban areas across the city of Shillong to regulate street vendors and ensure food safety compliance.

On Tuesday, Assistant Food Commissioner B.B.S. Mukhim directed officials to collect data on market vendors, including their names and business details, for further review.

Speaking to the media, Mukhim emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety and proper street vendor management in urban areas. She stated that the government aims to protect the livelihood of market vendors while maintaining organized and safe street sales.

The initiative is part of the implementation of the Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, which seeks to balance vendor rights with public safety and urban management. Mukhim explained that the provisions of the Act need to be properly structured into rules and regulations to be effectively enforced.

She further highlighted that the 2019 guidelines under the Act require immediate enforcement to regulate and protect street vendors while ensuring that public spaces are free from hazards and congestion.

The Food Safety Department has urged all vendors to comply with the registration process, as inspections will continue to ensure adherence to the law.
