Shillong, April 17: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Prisons), Sniawbhalang Dhar, has informed that the government is yet to finalise the location for construction of the Central Jail.

“We are still identifying the location for the setting up of the Central Jail. Once the location is finalized and a new jail is constructed, we will shift the present Shillong District Jail from the heart of the city,” Dhar told reporters on Friday.

Earlier, the Central Jail was proposed to be constructed at the New Shillong Township. An agreement was also signed between the Home (Jail) Department and the Urban Affairs Department for shifting of the Shillong District Jail to the New Shillong Township.

Dhar, however, said that he cannot say whether it will be in the New Shillong Township or other places because the process of identifying the location is still on.
