Shillong, July 18: In a significant move to advance socio-economic development, the Government of Meghalaya and the Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM Shillong) signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday.
This agreement, marking a new chapter in the region’s development, was formalized in the presence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Shishir Kumar Bajoria, Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIM Shillong.
The signing took place on a date of profound historical importance, the 189th death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, honoring his legacy of sacrifice and leadership. Prof. D.P. Goyal, Director of IIM Shillong, and Cyril V Diengdoh, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Planning, Investment Promotion and Sustainable Development Department, officially signed the MoU.
The agreement outlines several strategic initiatives aimed at fostering capacity building, leadership development, and practical engagements between the State Government and IIM Shillong. Key activities under this collaboration include:
1. Chief Minister’s State Business Plan Competition (College Level): This competition aims to ignite entrepreneurial spirit and promote sustainable business practices among college students in Meghalaya.
2. Capacity Building and Global Leadership Programs: These programs are designed for government officers, enhancing their skills and leadership capabilities to drive sustainable development effectively.
3. Management Development Programs: Tailored specifically for the Autonomous District Councils, these programs aim to bolster administrative and governance skills.
4. Live Projects for IIM Shillong Students: Offering students hands-on experience, these projects provide opportunities to work with various government departments and block offices on real-world challenges.
Prof. D.P. Goyal emphasized the institute’s 16-year legacy of excellence, highlighting its contributions to Meghalaya’s development through high-quality academic research and innovative teaching methods. He also showcased the ongoing initiatives by the Centre for Community Impact and Engagement for the North East (NE-CCIE), aimed at societal welfare and future plans for further community engagement.
Shishir Kumar Bajoria underscored the Institute’s growth and the support it has received from the state government, emphasizing the MoU’s significance for future collaborations.
At the ceremony, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of strategic interventions in addressing the state’s social challenges.
He highlighted pioneering initiatives like the CM Connect scheme, the CM Entrepreneurship Challenge, and efforts to reduce the maternal mortality rate.
The Chief Minister called on IIM Shillong’s talented students to use their skills and expertise to tackle these challenges, aiming to create a brighter future for Meghalaya.
