Shillong, March 26: Meghalaya government is awaiting Governor CH Vijayashankar’s approval before it takes the final call on shutting down CMJ University. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was expected to meet him regarding the matter on Wednesday evening.

Informing this on Wednesday, cabinet minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said the issue came up for discussion during the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday. “In fact, discussions have gone in a very positive way. Since there are issues where the Governor of Meghalaya is also involved, so the cabinet has today authorized the Chief Minister to brief the Governor. Once that happens, the matter will then come back to the cabinet,” he informed.

“The discussion today will be carried on in the first cabinet meeting to be held in the month of April,” the minister added.

When asked about the timeline for the university’s closure, Lyngdoh said, “We will take a final call once the CM meets the honourable Governor and the Cabinet meets in the first or second week of April, after which we will then take the few other logical steps.”

He affirmed that the government is actively moving in the direction of winding up the university.

Regarding the Chief Minister’s meeting with the Governor, Lyngdoh mentioned, “I think today he is meeting the Governor.”
