Meghalaya Govt repeals Rajeet Lal University Act, 2011, CM cites lack of progress & unsatisfactory response

Shillong, July 20: The state Cabinet on Thursday approved the proposal to pass an ordinance to repeal the Rajeet Lal University Act, 2011.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the Rajeet Lal University Act was passed in the Assembly in 2011 but for multiple reasons till 2020 the assent of the Governor was not given.

In 2020, finally the assent of the Governor came in the month of February.

“However, from February 2020 till now, we have not seen any significant move being done by the University,” Sangma said.

He added that “the Private University Commission that we have that regulates the private universities have also written to the said university several times asking for their current status and no satisfactory reply has come from their end and, hence, after following due process, the cabinet has approved the proposal to pass an ordinance to repeal the Act, 2011.”
