Meghalaya Govt reviews monsoon impact, focuses on swift restoration of roads, provide aid

Shillong, July 4: In response to the recent monsoon rains causing widespread damage across Meghalaya, Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang, on Thursday convened a review meeting with district officials to assess the impact on road connectivity and infrastructure. The meeting also addressed the distribution of relief and fund allocation.

In East Jaintia Hills, despite landslides, connectivity was restored on NH-6 and DSSMH Road, with the Chief Secretary instructing the halting of mining activities near water bodies. In West Jaintia Hills, roads such as Umlong-Puriang and Dawki-Amlarem were affected but have been partially cleared, with local PWD officers tasked with filling potholes to ensure smooth vehicle movement.

East Khasi Hills saw landslides affecting 17 roads, all of which are now cleared; a drowning incident in Nongmynsong was reported, and the Chief Secretary ordered the release of ex-gratia payments.

In Eastern West Khasi Hills, 21 villages and multiple roads were affected by landslides, but all have been cleared. Ri-Bhoi experienced a minor landslide at Umbang, with no significant damage or connectivity disruption. In West Khasi Hills, a landslide at Tiehsaw was cleared within 24 hours, and vulnerable areas have been identified and are being monitored. South West Khasi Hills reported three landslides with no traffic disruptions.

In North Garo Hills, no major damages occurred, with all landslides cleared. East Garo Hills saw landslides at Songkama village being cleared, restoring connectivity. In West Garo Hills, four villages were cut off; relief efforts, including providing boats and essential supplies, are underway. South West Garo Hills experienced major landslides and erosion, but temporary restorations allow light vehicle movement, and flood-affected families have received food supplies. South Garo Hills faced multiple landslides affecting key roads and residential areas, with temporary solutions implemented for vehicle movement.

The Chief Secretary emphasized that Rs. 13.5 crores in advance funds are available for immediate relief, with more funds to be allocated as needed. Priority is given to restoring connectivity to isolated villages and ensuring the provision of essential commodities, medicines, drinking water, and toilet facilities across all districts.

Key officials in attendance included Sanjay Goyal, Commissioner & Secretary, Revenue & Disaster Management Department; Syed Md. A. Razi, Commissioner & Secretary PWD (R&B); M. War Nongbri, Secretary and ED, SDMA; and Deputy Commissioners from all districts, alongside other PWD Roads and Revenue & Disaster Management Department personnel.
