Meghalaya Govt to finalise decision on closing down of MCCL within six months

SHILLONG, FEB 21: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Commerce & Industries Sniawbhalang Dhar on Wednesday informed that the government will take a final decision on whether to close down the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL) within six months.

Replying in the Assembly, Dhar said that the matter to close down the MCCL at Sohra is under examination by the government.

The MCCL, with a total of 278 employees, has been shutdown since 2020.

“Within six months’ time, we will be able to take decision (on closure of the plant),” he said.

Dhar also assured that the government will take on board all stakeholders for arriving at the best decision.

“I assure you we will take the right decision and nobody should be affected,” he said.

The deputy chief minister also said that modalities will be worked out (to take care of the employees) in case the government decide to close down the plant while responding to a question raised by AITC legislator from Nongthymmai Charles Pyngrope.

According to Dhar, presently partly payment is being made to the employees as per availability of funds.

Earlier, NPP legislator from Sohra Gavin M Mylliem urged the state government to expedite the decision in consultation with the stakeholders and to ensure it should be in the interest of the employees.
