Shillong, June 27: Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri on Thursday accompanied 76-year-old marathon runner Kmoin Wahlang to meet Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, ahead of her participation in the upcoming Pan Pacific Masters Games 2024 in Gold Coast, Australia.
Briefing the media after the meeting, Warjri said, “As we all know through news channels, Kong (meaning sister) will represent our country in Australia. She is participating in marathons of 10 kms, 5 kms, 3 kms, 1.5 kms, and 500 meters. I met her personally, and the CM wanted to meet her personally to assure her that the government is there to help. We wish her all the best and hope she brings medals not only for our state but for our country as a whole.”
When asked about his feelings regarding Wahlang representing the state abroad, Warjri expressed, “I believe it makes the whole state proud to see a woman of her age, 76 years old, participating in a 10 km marathon. It is a proud moment for our state and our country. We feel very happy and wish her good health and God’s blessings through her journey.”
Kmoin Wahlang, the inspiring long-distance runner from Meghalaya, has been invited to join the Indian athletics team for the 13th Pan Pacific Masters Games 2024, scheduled for November in Queensland, Australia. Her selection came following her impressive performance at an event in Hyderabad earlier this year.
Wahlang, who will compete in the 800m, 1500m, and 3000m events in the 75-plus age category, expressed her happiness after meeting with Chief Minister Sangma and Sports Minister Warjri. She hopes to inspire the next generation and thanked the government for its support.
She added, “I hope to win medals outside the country and bring laurels not only to the state but also to the entire nation.”
