Shillong, May 2: Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar has emphasized the critical need for stronger conservation efforts to protect forest resources and biodiversity in the Khasi Hills region.
He highlighted the importance of balancing ecological preservation with developmental goals and announced that a series of stakeholder meetings would be convened to address these environmental concerns in a coordinated manner.
He told this to a delegation of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), led by Chief Executive Member (CEM) Shemborlang Rynjah, who paid a courtesy visit to the Meghalaya Governor at Raj Bhavan on Friday.

Governor Vijayashankar also stressed the promotion of traditional practices such as Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric cultivation, and beekeeping as sustainable livelihood avenues for the region.
Earlier, he welcomed the delegation in a traditional manner, felicitating each member with the Khasi Ryndia.
Congratulating Rynjah and his team on assuming office, the Governor urged them to work towards strengthening grassroots governance, preserving traditional institutions, and ensuring inclusive development. He also reaffirmed the significance of upholding the constitutional values enshrined in the Sixth Schedule.
The KHADC members briefed the Governor on the Council’s current operations and outlined key challenges facing the Khasi Hills region. They sought financial support for developmental initiatives, including the maintenance of the Khasi Heritage Village at Mawphlang and the preservation of cultural and infrastructural assets.
