Meghalaya has over 29 lakh youth; only 6 lakh people above the age of 45 years

Shillong, Dec 10: In a startling revelation, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has disclosed that Meghalaya has only 6 lakh people above the age of 45 years.

For reference, according to Ministry of Jal Shakti, Meghalaya’s population as of April 1, 2024 is 35.8 lakh. This means the state has over 29 lakh people identified as youth!

Inaugurating the New Science Block and Extension of Classroom Block-B of Sngap Syiem College at Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills on Tuesday, CM Sangma emphasised on the importance of investing in the youth due to the State’s predominantly young population where the role of education becomes extremely important. He stressed that education is crucial for development of each individual and ultimately their contribution to the state and the nation, and also mentioned about the impact of different programs of the government at different levels education.

“In almost every level of education, the government has intervened by creating policies, programs, infrastructural support and support in terms of sanctioned posts of which I’m happy that your college also is part of today,” he said.

Referring to the cabinet meeting of Monday, CM Sangma informed that Science and Commerce streams would start in five government colleges that are there in different parts of the state namely Sohra, Mawphlang, Williamnagar, Baghmara.

“It is unfair that the students cannot choose the subjects that they would like to study, and therefore it is our endeavour to ensure that we are able to give the necessary options for the students to choose the line that they would like to study as necessitated by the NEP,” he stated.

He further said that it is an endeavour of the government to provide a broader choice of subject for students to specialise and informed that the government is working on the introduction of Science and Commerce streams in different colleges in the state starting from government colleges and further to the People’s colleges.

The Chief Minister also announced the sanction of the school bus and also a contribution of Rs. 20 lakh rupees for the development of the college.
