Shillong, March 27: Meghalaya successfully hosted the Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament 2025, a platform designed to empower young minds and shape the nation’s future policies. The State Round of the event, held at the Lariti International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture, Mawkasiang, was organized by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and the National Service Scheme (NSS).

Addressing the inaugural session, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma emphasized the significance of youth-driven policies, stating, “The final resolution crafted after this event will reflect the brilliance of youth policies, bringing them to the forefront of governance and public discourse.” He encouraged participants to dream big yet remain humble, respect diverse perspectives, and recognize the power of every voice in shaping the nation.

The event witnessed the presence of prominent dignitaries, including Umsning legislator Celestine Lyngdoh, Mawlai legislator Brightstarwell Marbaniang, Rajabala legislator Mizanur Rahman Kazi, Deputy Government Chief Whip and Mookaiaw legislator Nujorki Sungoh, Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Andrew Simons, and Deputy Director of NYKS D. Rapsang.

Andrew Simons described the Youth Parliament as a crucial initiative for young people to engage in meaningful discussions on constitutional matters.

F. Rumnong, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education, expressed confidence that initiatives like these would inspire the next generation to actively participate in governance and nation-building.

A total of 69 students from across Meghalaya participated in the Youth Parliament, deliberating on two key themes:

“75 Years of the Indian Constitution: A Journey of Rights, Duties, and Progress”

“The 11 Sankalp of Samvidhan Divas: A Pledge to Strengthen India’s Constitutional Values”

The top three winners of the Meghalaya round were:

First Prize: Saurabh Kumar, North Eastern Hill University (East Khasi Hills) – ₹10,000

Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament

Second Prize: Kalung Angel, Don Bosco College, Byndihati (East Jaintia Hills) – ₹5,000

Third Prize: Dabitkupar Syiemlieh, Sngap Syiem College, Mawkyrwat (South West Khasi Hills) – ₹3,000

All 69 participants received certificates of participation. The top three winners will now advance to the National Level in New Delhi, where they will speak on “One Nation, One Election: Simplifying Democracy, Amplifying Progress, Ensuring Stability.”

Secretary Malthus S. Sangma emphasized that initiatives like these contribute to a brighter future for the state, commending the participants for their enthusiasm and potential.
