Shillong, Dec 4: The selection committee of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC), chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on Wednesday extended the term of judicial member Baffindalyne Giri for another 3 years.
Giri’s five-year tenure ended on October 17. However, the decision to extend her tenure was delayed due to Tynsong’s ill health, which prevented the committee from convening.
Addressing the press after the meeting, Chief Minister Sangma stated, “The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission meeting had to deliberate on the judicial member’s post. We currently have Smt. Giri, who has completed her initial five-year term. Considering the age limit of 70 years and her present age of 67, the committee, headed by the Chief Secretary, has recommended extending her term for another three years. This would allow her to continue as the judicial member until the age of 70.”
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Chief Secretary DP Wahlang are the other members of the selection committee.
The absence of a quorum after the expiry of Giri’s term had left the MHRC unable to conduct meetings or hear cases. According to the MHRC Act, the Commission requires a quorum of two of its three members, including the chairperson, to make decisions.
