Meghalaya, Jharkhand lawmakers forge new ties over governance and development

Shillong, April 23: Meghalaya and Jharkhand discussed improving governance, development and ways of collaboration to learn from each other.

The Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly hosted an interactive session with its counterpart from the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly at the Assembly Secretariat’s Conference Hall in Shillong on Tuesday.

Chaired by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, the meeting brought together legislators and officials from both states to exchange ideas on governance mechanisms, welfare implementation challenges, and the evolving role of legislative committees in fostering development.

The Jharkhand delegation, currently on a study tour across Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Odisha, was led by Litipara MLA Hemlal Murmu and included MLAs K.S.B. Mehta (Panki), Mathura Mahto (Giridih), and Amit Kumar (Silli). The visitors were welcomed by members of Meghalaya’s Estimates Committee, including Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar (Mawkyrwat), Adelbert Nongrum (North Shillong), Remington Gabil Momin (Rambrai-Jyrngam), Charles Marngar (Mawhati), and Miani D Shira (Ampati).

Deliberations focused on the structural and functional similarities and differences between the two assemblies, especially about the Estimates Committee’s mandate in monitoring budget allocations and development schemes. Syiem emphasised the tribal roots of both states and offered insights into how Meghalaya’s committee navigates governance and accountability.

Murmu lauded Meghalaya’s natural beauty, describing it as “heaven on Earth,” and praised tourism highlights such as Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong, Asia’s cleanest village. He advocated for a stronger national role for Estimates Committees, suggesting that such bodies can bridge governance gaps through rigorous oversight.

Jharkhand legislator K.S.B. Mehta extended a warm invitation for a reciprocal visit to their state, while Mathura Mahto, echoing patriotic sentiment, called Meghalaya a reflection of “Saare Jahan Se Achha.” Silli MLA Amit Kumar added humour to the proceedings with anecdotes, while appreciating the vibrant legislative engagement in Meghalaya

The Meghalaya Committee briefed the delegation on innovative approaches in key development initiatives, including education, public health engineering, health, and community and rural development.
