Shillong, Dec 8: In a bid to strengthen its tourism sector, the Meghalaya government has launched a “Land Bank” initiative aimed at facilitating the development of tourism infrastructure across the state. The project seeks to address the shortage of accommodation in key tourist destinations while promoting inclusive and sustainable growth.

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced that the government has issued a call for Expressions of Interest (EoI), inviting landowners and communities to collaborate on tourism accommodation projects. The deadline for submissions is mid-January 2025.

“The land bank will be pivotal for expanding accommodation facilities in underserved areas such as Dawki,” Lyngdoh stated. “In Garo Hills, we are promoting adventure and wildlife tourism, which will attract visitors to regions that have been underdeveloped. The entire state will benefit from this initiative, and it is expected to generate an additional one lakh jobs in the next two to three years.”

The government aims to forge joint venture agreements with individuals, community groups, and landowners willing to contribute land for tourism development. Dawki, a popular tourist hub known for its crystal-clear river, has seen a surge in visitor footfall, but accommodation remains scarce.

“We are seeking offers from the community and landowners to part with their land and partner with the government,” Lyngdoh explained. “The EoI process is already underway, and we have set a deadline for submissions in mid-January.”
