Shillong, April 22: In a step toward prioritising mental health and emotional literacy in education, Meghalaya has signed a landmark three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to roll out the Youth Wellbeing and Thriving Initiative across schools in the state.
The partnership brings together MPOWER (Meghalaya Multisectoral Programme for Adolescent Wellbeing and Resilience), the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT) under the Education Department, Government of Meghalaya, and the WorldBeing India Foundation.
The idea is to make mental health and adolescent well-being a central pillar of education. Meghalaya is placing its youth at the forefront of policy and systemic reform with an eye on sustainable human development.

Under the initiative, schools across the state will witness a wave of change aimed at integrating wellbeing into the very fabric of education. Key components include the development of wellbeing-focused curricula and textbooks for Grades 6 to 10, structured training for both in-service and pre-service teachers, and systems to track progress while recognising school-level leadership in promoting mental health.
Notably, the programme aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which underscores the importance of nurturing resilience, emotional literacy, and life skills among adolescents.

The initiative is supported by the State Capability Enhancement Project (SCEP), a broader human development reform platform that is fostering cross-sectoral coordination and enabling impactful collaborations.
Officials say these efforts are advancing a future where mental health is mainstreamed within education, and wellbeing is recognised as a foundational part of learning and growth.
